Do you ever feel sometimes like you’re under siege from a barrage of bad news?
Last week was Blue Monday, apparently the most depressing day of the year. Womp.
A couple of weeks before that was the day people are most likely to file for a divorce following Christmas festivities.
And on and on it goes.
In a month that is already characterised by a massive sugar crash following a fortnight of meals punctuated by handfuls of Cadbury’s Roses, Celebrations and/or (if you’re really retro) Quality Streets, do we really need almost daily reminders of ‘reasons to be gloomy’ this month’?
Of course you can’t argue with data. Nobody said the start of the year wasn’t rough. But with a constant bombardment of negative messages assailing you from virtually every quarter, the risk of self-sabotage is real.
So in a radical act of self-love, why not focus on what is awesome about the start of a new year, make a list of those things and plan to do something that keeps you upbeat every single month for the rest of the year.
For instance, if your new hot pink lipstick imbues you with effervescent goodwill and makes you smile at strangers (bizarre thing to do in London but at least will help ward off the crazies), wear it.
If you know being around certain friends or family members fills you with enough joy to last you several weeks of good moods, be the person that arranges a date to see them so you have something to look forward to.
In summary: don’t let life happen to you. Like some sort of flailing amoeba grasping for a lifeline. Get on top of it and steer it the way you want.
But whatever you do, please don’t whinge. Seriously.
